De schilderijen van Erik van der Krogt
De kunstenaar werkt al een aantal jaren met “shaped canvases” (vormdoeken). De vierhoekige utilitaire vorm van schilderijen vindt hij te vanzelfsprekend. Hij onderzoekt de vorm van het doek als een volwaardig beeldelement in zowel de echte als de picturale ruimte.
Van der Krogt ontleent de thema's voor zijn schilderijen aan de eigen directe woonomgeving. Zijn opvatting is dat alles de moeite waard is om aandachtig te worden bekeken. Verder is er een duidelijke fascinatie met architectuur en licht. In zijn "representatieve" schilderijen wordt abstractie nagestreefd zonder de concrete waarneming en reële werkelijkheid los te laten. Naar zijn mening kan alles worden gezien als een abstractie.
De kunstenaar is geďnspireerd door Japanse prenten (Ukyo-e) en striptekeningen van o.a. Hergé, evenals door interieurschilderingen van Saenredam, Vermeer en Hopper.
Behalve als beeldend kunstenaar werkt Erik van der Krogt als illustrator en ontwerper/uitvoerder van bouwprojecten.

Shaped canvas
Shaped canvases hebben een andere vorm dan de gangbare vierhoekige schilderijen. Het platte karakter van een schilderij blijft echter behouden. Door de geschiedenis heen zijn er altijd al afwijkende contouren gebruikt. Voorbeelden zijn de Gotische altaarstukken en vierbladen of barokke ovalen zoals de tondo van Rafael. In de 60er jaren van de vorige eeuw werd een groot aantal zeer uiteenlopende shaped canvases vooral in New York geproduceerd. Volgens Frances Colpitt* komen de shaped canvases voort uit een thematiek van de abstracte schilderkunst, namelijk de behoefte om in de echte ruimte te treden. Tegelijk wees men de illusionistische ruimte-achter-het-kader af. De belangrijkste kunstenaars die geassocieerd worden met de term shaped canvas zijn Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland en Ellswoth Kelly.

Paintings of Erik van der Krogt
For several years the artist has been using shaped canvases for his paintings. He holds the rectangle utilitarian form of paintings as too obvious. He investigates the shape of the canvas in formalistic sculptural ways and applies real space as well as illusionistic space in his work.
Van der Krogt derives the themes for his paintings from the everyday living environment. He maintains that everything that surrounds us is worthwhile to be observed and further more a clear fascination can be found for light and architecture. In his 'representative' paintings Erik van der Krogt pursues abstraction without losing concrete observations of the photographic reality. To his opinion everything can be seen as an abstraction.
The artist finds his inspiration a.o. in Japanese woodprints (ukyo-e) and comic book drawings of Hergé, as well as in interior paintings by the artists, Saenredam, Vermeer and Hopper.
Besides being an artist Erik van der Krogt works as an illustrator and designer-producer of architectural projects.

Shaped canvas
Shaped canvases differ from the normal, rectangular configuration. But the characteristic flatness of the painting retains. Throughout history other irregular shapes have been used. Some examples are the Gothic altarpieces and the quatrefoil or baroque oval like the tondo by Raphael. During the 1960s a great variety and quantity of shaped canvas were produced mostly in New York. Frances Colpitt* explains that the shaped canvas grew out of the issues of abstract painting; the desire of painters to move into real space. At the same time they rejected the “behind-the-frame illusionism”. The most important examples of artists associated with the use of the shaped canvas Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland and Ellswoth Kelly.
